Underpinning, July 2019

"Images from Nicola Singh's contribution to Underpinning - an informal reading of Claudia Rankine's 'The White Card', a one act play that explores race and selfhood in contemporary America. The second act of Rankin’s play is an open dialogue between the audience wherever the play is read or performed. Nicola invited participation from audience members to read the characters from the play, before transiting into the second act of the play.

The reading transported us between domestic spaces - the New York City loft dinner party of ‘The White Card’ to a flat in Aberdeen, Scotland, the residential setting of artist-led initiative Underpinning. Nicola is gratefully utilising the device of Rankine’s play as an invitation to discuss racial divisions across the white spaces of our living rooms, art galleries and the imagination itself.

Nicola is producing an editioned work for Underpinning connected to this event - using annotated copies of the script from the reading and experimenting with them as an extension of the live event and a provocation to further discuss our ability/inability to talk about race publicly."
